The Dolly presence actually helps given that they have made the show broader, more schticky (is that a word) and marketed heavily towards female theatregoers here in the UK.
The new "thing" with a few West End shows is to market to the "Hen-Do" crowd (bachelorette parties) that prefer working a theatre-going experience into their evening party plans. This is a plus and a minus depending on how you feel about occasionally drunken ladies who may have a had a few too many before they arrive at the theatre and continue drinking/partying while the show is in progress. Many a show (including Dirty Dancing) had a lengthy run not because of good ticket sales but because of great bar receipts. Lots of punters had drinks before the show, during both acts and during the interval and that adds up. And yes, many of them were hen parties.
Pretty Woman is on track to market to the same demographic so buyer beware. |
