Really and truly awful. I can only speak on the first half - I was part of a majority in my section that fled at intermission.
You've seen a hundred plays like this before.
No stakes, just a "situation."
All the characters sound the same (none human).
Laughable exposition. Less laughable punchlines.
A fancy set!
Poor casting and worse direction.
Boring bland general language and then, SURPRISE, some "adult" language about gay sex. How positively SHOCKING.
I just wrote - and deleted - a list of more specific qualms, but life is too short to discuss this type of overwhelmingly mediocre theatre. Why are companies still producing these plays? It's not as if the play is even satisfying a target demographic! Last night's audience of mostly older white patrons would chuckle here or there, but hardly the riotous reception that the creative members (including the playwright, loitering in the rear of the theatre) could have been hoping for. And the elderly couple in front of us had no problem turning around and making a show of their leaving at intermission (I, for one, was excited for a bit of real humor and entertainment that night!). |
