DANA H. Tonight (Possible Spoilers)

Lucas Hnath has provided an exquisite acting challenge in this piece which is met with spectacular aplomb here by Deidre O'Connell. DANA H. is yet another example of documentary theatre that is also a trauma narrative. Hnath's mother was abducted and held captive for five months. She was later interviewed about her experience and the play is an reenactment of these interviews, but they're entirely lip-synced. For 75 minutes, O'Connell doesn't say a word herself and yet her depiction of this woman's profound terror is uncanny and extraordinary. As a metaphor for the kind of dissociation that trauma compels, this concretization of a disembodied voice is ingenious. DANA H. is arguably more an exercise than a full fledged play--whatever that may be--but it's entirely riveting thanks to O'Connell. You don't really watch DANA H., you witness it.

I saw it in Los Angeles with the same performer. It is spectacularly good—and also the toughest 75 minutes I’ve ever spent in the theatre. Management posted signs with places to call if one had a similar experience. I hope that something similar will be available at these performances.
