| That phrase and people who say it is a huge pet peeve of mine. It means they clearly do not hate musicals, they just didn't like the musicals they saw or even more likely they saw a bad production of a musical they might have liked in a great production. People who aren't "theater people" love to decide that one musical speaks for and to what all musicals will be like and seem overly willing to never blame a production of a musical rather than the musical. The overwhelming majority of people who say this, in my experience have seen very few musicals and cannot speak to what most musicals are really like. Even less have seen many *great* musicals, let alone in great productions. (I pretty much always ask follow up questions when I hear this statement, and also would confidently guess based on talking to people through my life that the average person who doesn't "like musicals" or have parents that do, have only seen like 0-5 full musicals (not counting Disney animated films) and usually bad high school productions or films as kids they were half paying attention to) Can any of them imagine seeing a movie they don't like and saying "I hate movies but I love Th Godfather / Titanic / Toy Story (whatever)"?! No way. If they've seen a musical and didn't hate it (let alone if they loved it) then they just simply do not hate musicals. It doesn't have to be a choice between loving all musicals or hating all musicals (sometimes with a mild "not really a musicals person" option), and I don't know why so many people see it that way. |
