| Saw MOULIN ROUGE again tonight. First time was over the holidays (given a ticket as a gift). Felt the same way both times. While I loved the movie, I felt this was an elaborately-produced, energetically-performed Vegas show. It's pretty much an endless medley of pop songs, constantly interrupting itself to segue into something new. Every segue is greeted with laughter (appreciative, I guess) that takes you right out of the show. The audience gets such a kick out of recognizing the song snippets that you lose the show. It felt like a benefit concert with first-rate performers nodding and winking to the audience. The only time the whole thing worked for me was during the finale medley, which was joyful and fun and not tethered to any plot. Burstein is great; I think he can do anything. Tveit is an engaging stage presence and great performer, but I think he's wasted here (even with all he gets to do....there's just not a character there to play). Oh, for those keeping score, Olivo was out again (like she was the first time I saw it). Standby Ashley Loren has a strong voice and does fine. For what it's worth, the audience seemed to like it a lot both times I saw it. I was hoping for so much more. Tons of picture taking of the set (just made for Instagram)....and ushers frequently had to flash lights at audience members making illegal videos (like the woman next to me, who made several attempts during the finale...) |
