Is Harry Potter Worth It If You're Only A Casual Fan?
Posted by: Tergod 03:44 pm EST 02/23/20

Now that it's definite The Inheritance won't be around in June, I find myself with an open Sunday. I've resisted HP & CC mainly because there were other things I wanted to see more, not to mention the monetary investment. However, it did win six Tonys and it's hard to find a bad review. I'm not a huge HP fan but do appreciate a good story, well told - the 5 hour length is more intriguing than off putting, so that's not a problem - in fact, I'm kind of a sucker for a nice, long play. Plus, I can get into some good special effects; I even enjoyed King Kong (except when it tried to be a musical). I just don't want to be bored because I'm not a fan. Have any non-fans of the whole HP world seen the show? What did you think? Worth it just for the stagecraft/story? Thanks.

How "casual" a fan are you? Have you read the books? Seen the films? If not, I would strongly recommend at least watching the movies (you've got plenty of time). If you have seen them, then watch them again. And pay special attention to "Goblet of Fire" and the two "Deathly Hallows" films. While I have heard many people unfamiliar with the story say that they loved it, I think you would get more out of it with familiarity. There are several revelations in the play that get a collective "gasp" from the audience ("Blah, blah, blah, blah, NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM" is the one that comes immediately to mind) and I think it's more fun to be a part of that. Also, they open the doors an hour early for Part 2 so take the time to explore the lobby of the theater, upstairs and down; it really is spectacular. The play itself is very well done. Funny, dramatic, sad, and the stagecraft is amazing.

If you have seen them, then watch them again.

This is not necessary. If you've seen them once, that's enough.

On a Tuesday night, when a good friend offered me a FREE ticket for both plays the next day (Wednesday matinee and evening -- performances that I happened to be free to attend) -- I had not read one word of the HP novels or seen a frame of the films. I read the Wikipedia synopsis of the seven novels the next morning, met her at the theater, and had an AWESOME time. It is thrilling, fun, and extremely involving -- even to someone like me, who had no prior knowledge of the series. It's just a great show. Go.

My nephew wanted to see the play more than anything in the world. I have never seen any of the movies or read the books. I went in 100% blind. I was enchanted from start to finish. I thought the story was beautiful if maybe a little stuffed to justify the length. I understood the play on one level and my nephew filled me in after each part on what I missed. Didn’t bother me at all. You will enjoy it.

At the time the show opened, Elisabeth Vincentelli wrote a feature piece (not a review) about her experience seeing the show completely blind. I thought the title was hilarious. It was called, “Who Is Neville Longbottom, and Why Should I Care?”

I would say yes, if you don’t pay that much. The storyline is not great, but the stagecraft is impressive, as is the renovation of the theater specifically for this show.

Mild spoilers to follow

If you’ve seen all the films already, re-watch #4 and the last one if you have limited time. As is common with movie sequels, they don’t explain anything. They assume you know who everybody is and their backstory.

If you enjoyed the movies, you’d probably like the play

I’m not a huge fan (didn’t read the books) but watched the movies when they were released. I liked the play, but clearly the fans love it. If you do go, see the movies AGAIN. They are actually well crafted when you watch over a weekend or two and it will help immeasurably in getting the references in the play since it time jumps to the books/movies. And for ticket buying, depending when your trip is, there are discounts and dynamic price dropping near performances. So you probably won’t have to pay a huge amount for both parts. Finally, you do need to see both parts. It’s not like inheritance or even angels in America where you can see the first part and feel satisfied.

My daughter (huge fan) saw it in San Francisco with her husband (very casual fan) and both enjoyed it, especially the stagecraft.

Laura, who has the play in her school library and has to explain to students that it’s NOT a novel....

i had read the books and then after I became a fan of Daniel Radcliffe's from his theater work watched the movies. I went to see this early in th. e run. The effects are spectacular and the story is as strong as any of the movies, I think. I saw it over two successive nights and after the first night, I wanted to stand and shout and make them do Part II immediately. I saw the original cast and they were very strong. My nephew (36 years old) a casual fan saw it this past weekend (both parts for a little over $125) found it exhilarating. It is not Arthur Miller but it is an entertaining fun time in the theater. I do plan to go again someday.
