|I saw the tour of Rock Of Ages last year and admittedly, had a great time. I had basically ignored the show and hadn't listened to the album, because I really wasn't interested in hearing what I figured would be slavish creations of all those songs. But seeing the show, having fun with the clearly campy humor of it, the meta-references (including the "road case" set design), and the sometimes clever way songs were used, made the evening add up to much more than just the "nostalgia" effect of the songs. But I never would have felt that way from just hearing the CD.
Spelling Bee was another show that I had to see (and do) to really get to love it - even as a big Bill Finn fan, I wasn't all that fond of a lot of the CD when I first heard it. (Some numbers, of course, like "The I Love You Song," were as emotionally impactful as intended.) But in getting to know the complete stage show, it's hard to imagine why I didn't fall in love with it sooner.
An opposite moment - growing up with the Dreamgirls LP, one big dramatic moment in particular always grabbed me - when Effie's "One Night Only" gets abruptly stolen, mid-song, and becomes a number for the Dreams in a continuation of the musical montage. How disappointed I was when I found out it doesn't really work that way in the show - Effie sings more of the song (it doesn't end for her on that long high note), then there's a dialogue scene before the Dreams sing. So that big dramatic musical moment of the song suddenly, abruptly being "stolen" was only a creation in the recording studio. But to this day, I much prefer the way it's done on the recording - to me it's much more devastating.
