Every individual case is different, but I would say that stage directions can go a long way towards making specific moments come alive in a script. I believe the current fashion is to make stage directions as sparse as possible, as compared to the writings of people like O'Neill and Williams and Rodgers & Hammerstein, but I don't see why you can't go against fashion if you feel it necessary. Of course this specific advice doesn't help in terms of making a moment clear and more effective on a cast recording.
