"American Son" on Netflix

I did not see the play by Christopher Demos-Brown in New York (it was supposed to be running right now in my area), and I just caught up on the film/play hybrid on Netflix.

It's not really a great play, with some dialogue and the character of the cop Paul Larkin, played by Jeremy Jordan, particularly ringing false.

But, ultimately, I'm glad I stuck with it - there are so many good elements here, and the ending heartbreaking, as appropriate. I feel a better play could have been written and adapted.

I kind of went back and forth on Kerry Washington's performance (unlike many, I don't think I've seen her in anything before, though I know she is well known), and I wanted Steven Pasquale to just sing, dammit.
