While I think you're exaggerating quite a bit, I do agree that this is a big problem -- especially among the general public, if not among people who are knowledgeable in the field (obviously). I think it has become a great problem in recent years because, when you google the title of a famous song, often the first results you get will associate it with the most famous singer(s) of the songs rather than with the composer. (A related part of the problem is the fact that, while all of the singers in question are famous to one degree or another, not every songwriter is as famous as a Gershwin or a Rodgers or a Bacharach or a David Foster et al. )
