|Yes, and, hence, any play set in the time in which it was written becomes "dated" in the rather narrow way you describe. I think the characters and relationships in LVC have a truth to them that transcends the moment in which the play was written and set, while addressing the most pressing issue (AIDS) of the time for the gay men who inhabit the play. And we're not so far away from even that epidemic (many of us would say it is not over, despite the extension of lives and lowering of fatalities among middle-class gay white men) than we might think. It takes a certain lack of historical perspective to see so recent a play and dismiss its value beyond its original production as "dated."|
