Michael, while I appreciate your assessment of the play, for me, the "wild" shifts of tone from comedy to tragedy to anger to song and back again are precisely what make the play so exciting, affecting and engaging. One moment I'm laughing and the next I'm crying. I find the heightened characters to be archetypes and yet, still VERY MUCH like men I've known all my life. The stylization of the design in the original production supported the staging and the writing beautifully. I think the inevitable realism of the film doesn't work very well for a reason.
To each his own. I certainly don't expect to change anyone's mind about what they like or don't like.
