Nathan Lane in "Love, Valour, Compassion!"

With the recent passing of Terrence McNally, I watched some clips of "Love! Valour! Compassion!" on YouTube. Nathan Lane got great notices for his work and received both the Drama Desk and Outer Critics awards but -- while three cast mates were nominated for a Tony -- Lane was not. Was there any reason for this omission? Was it a topic of controversy back in 1995? It seems odd that he wasn't even nominated given the other accolades he received for the performance.
