Granted, this is based only on my suspicions and unofficial polling of my friends who vote during the awards season.

That being said, when it comes to the "foregone conclusion" assumption resulting in a snub, the first performance that comes to my mind is Ann Harada's in Avenue Q. Without taking anything away from Anika Noni Rose's beautiful (and ultimately Tony winning) performance in Caroline or Change, I feel like, that season, everyone thought the featured performance to beat was Harada's and thus decided to use their nominating power elsewhere.

I suspect the same is true of Aaron Tveit's work in Next to Normal.
