Joseph casting question? Why donny Osmond?

I just watched the movie of Joseph and the Amazing Technical Dream Coat. it was y first time, and I loved it. But, was curious on the casting of Donny Osmond. Does anyone know the story behind the show? Osmond was good enough and he's very likeable, but there were so many better actors to cast.Plus he wasn't a big star at the time. Kind of a retread. And he clearly didn't have the acting chops. Did Osmond agent push the idea? How did Andrew Lloyd settle on him? or was Webber a secret Osmond fan? Would love to know? thanks. David
