When his Joseph tour came through my city in the '90s, I went from thinking of him as sort of a has-been to being struck by the number of women I knew (many of whom were not regular theatregoers) whose fond memories of having crushes on Donny in the '70s had them eagerly buying tickets... And since the teenagers of the '70s were by the '90s raising kids of their own, most of them bought tickets for their whole families to see Donny Osmond in this fun, undemanding, wholesome musical. He may not have been a big star in general pop culture by that time, but I'd say he was exactly the right star, with exactly the right demographic, for that show. (Box-office-wise, I mean - I'm not claiming he was exactly the right actor or singer for that show talent-wise.)
