| "In hindsight, I'm sure that RUG was kicking themselves for not getting Osmond for Broadway, since Michael Damian (who?) didn't really set the world on fire. Maybe Osmond wasn't available at the time, but I would guess that a leading role in a major Broadway revival would have trumped any other professional commitments he might have had." Unavailability might have been the reason, but as I said, it does occur to me that maybe Osmond was afraid of or angry at the New York critics after LITTLE JOHNNY JONES. I have heard of some other stars avoiding Broadway (and Off-Broadway) for that reason. Julie Andrews did concerts in various places around the world for many years before she finally came back to the New York stage in PUTTING IT TOGETHER, and believe it or not, someone I know who worked with her said he thought it was because she was wary of how she would be received by the NY critics after being away for so long. Michael Damian was pretty to look at in JOSEPH.... and he sang the songs well enough, but in a very bland way, with little power or emotional/vocal range. |
