You're probably joking, but in those days, the rules for censorship in film were far more strict than in theater.
I too have always been amazed that "Pussy Galore," got through, but I'm assuming that even the most outrageous double entendre couldn't be stopped by the censors as long as it was a double entendre, because the filmmakers could insist that the non-"dirty" meaning was intended :-) That applies to "Beaver Cleaver" as well, and in that case, maybe I'm being naive, but I think it's unlikely the writers who named the character even had the double meaning in mind! |
