Teacher64, you are right, of course, that the Broadway production used the letter blocks. Thanks for setting me straight! I was thinking about the "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" number from Mary Poppins, where the ensemble did the contortions to be the shape of the letters.

I think that Matilda was extremely well-directed on Broadway. "When I Grow Up" has so many great directorial touches, from the adult actors taking over the swings to the slide in the back. The slide probably cost a non-trivial amount, and is literally used for about 10 seconds in the whole show, but it is a great touch.
