To me, giving out the Drama Desk Awards based on the first 11 months of the season is preferable than the alternatives: canceling this season's prizes or combining the 2019-20 shows with the 2020-21 shows for the 2021 awards. (''Six'' misses their March 11 cutoff deadline by only 1 day.) But as Stagebuff718 notes, the Drama Desks cover Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway, so there's plenty of award-caliber candidates.

It'll be interesting to see what's nominated for Music and Lyrics. ''The Lightning Thief'' is only Broadway musical this season with an original score, but it's not Drama Desk eligible because it was already considered for the 2017 Drama Desks (where it was nominated for Best Musical, Book and Supporting Actor). Two of the higher-profile Off-Broadway musicals are ''Girl From the North Country'' and ''Sing Street,'' but they don't have original scores either. So what makes the cut? Adam Gwon's ''Scotland, PA''? David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori's ''Soft Power''?

Now that the Drama Desks have announced their plans, do the Outer Critics follow suit? The Drama League? And, of course, The Tonys ...
