| It's old news, but that doesn't change the fact of its existence. As someone who just got into opera in the past few years, I find it mildly distracting how often I get pulled out of a Puccini opera by realizing that a phrase has been re-used, verbatim (at least to these amateur ears), in either "Phantom", "Cats", "Les Miz" or "Miss Saigon". The latter is a show that, like "Rent", is built on Puccini, though Larson had the decency to actually state in the show that it was a repurposing of the music. Truly, it only seems respectful to Puccini to point out when his key phrases have been repurposed - or we might say remixed - elsewhere. I grew up being told that there was a lot of Puccini in "Phantom", and I thought it was hyperbole, until I actually saw "Turandot" for the first time. And then my jaw dropped at how brazen Webber was in taking some of the most iconic moments from that score and dropping them into his play. I do admire his shamelessness (Great Artists Steal, after all), but I don't think we should stay silent about his theft; that's how old news becomes forgotten. |
