| Yes, but such things happen all the time. We could say that Leoncavallo stole the famous climax of Pagliacci's "Vesti la Giubba" from a literally identical passage in Verdi's Otello. Many composers including Bach. Handel, and Rossini often famously "repurposed" their own music. Orchestrators and film composers often "borrow" from other classical works. Pop music is also full of "stealing" - sometimes litigated, sometimes not. Jerry Herman settled out of court for ostensibly using a song called "Sunflower" as a basis for "Hello Dolly." And on and on. But somehow it's only the Webber/Puccini stuff that gets constantly brought up. | |
