"I grew up being told that there was a lot of Puccini in 'Phantom', and I thought it was hyperbole, until I actually saw 'Turandot' for the first time. And then my jaw dropped at how brazen Webber was in taking some of the most iconic moments from that score and dropping them into his play."
Although I have frequently written about the fact that there are MANY examples of Lloyd Webber shows containing melodies that were borrowed or lifted from, or at least sound VERY similar to, melodies previously by other composers (depending on how you want to phrase it), and though of course I'm well aware of the FANCIULLA melody that was used in PHANTOM, I have never noticed any actual melodies from TURANDOT in that score. I know TURANDOT like the back of my hand, but actually, I don't know all of PHANTOM that well (because I'm not a fan). So I would honesty and greatly appreciate it if you have the time and inclination to give some specific examples. |
