| Chromolume, I agree with you about people exaggerating the extent of the "stealing" in the cases you've mentioned. But again, for me, with ALW the issue is the sheer multitude of relatively brief sections of melodies in his scores that sound very much like melodies written previously by other composers. The FANCIULLA melody is actually one of the longest examples, at about for measures. But the point for me isn't the duration of the melody in any case, it's the fact that this example is only one of MANY that have been noticed in ALW's shows. Here, I would mention again -- because I still cannot get over it -- how floored I was when I first heard the song "Be My Host" from NO STRINGS, of all things, and the main melody of "With One Look" from SUNSET. BLVD suddenly came screaming out at me. I've provided this link before, but give a listen to the repeated phrase that's first heard at 0:29 and tell me if your jaw doesn't drop at how much it sounds like the melody of "they'll say Norma's back at last," "silent music starts to play," and "to my people in the dark" in the SUNSET song. |
