Musical theatre songwriters other than ALW have often unconsciously "borrowed" bits and pieces of show songs by other writers:

As recently noted here, "When Mabel Comes in the Room" from Jerry Herman's "Mack & Mabel" has a couple of lines almost identical to a couple of lines in "A Certain Girl" from Kander and Ebb's "The Happy Time." And Herman was confronted with a law suit owing to the similarities between the tune of the title song of "Dolly!"and the song "Sunflower."

The beginning of "No One Is Alone" from Sondheim's "Into the Woods" sounds very much like "The Candy Man" by Bricusse and Newley from the film "Willy Wonka..."

Early in the first act of "Turandot," when Calaf recognizes Timur as his father, the vocal and orchestral music that swells up sound a bit like "We'll have a new way of living....." from "Somewhere" in Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story."

Somehow these and many other such "borrowings" rarely come up when ALW's "borrowings" are discussed.
