Legendary original production I'll agree is a big hurdle for any director to get past, especially for a Sondheim musical... but I contend that not that many people who are going to see a revival of it in 2001 also actually saw the original, but i guess that won't stop them (me included) from knowing about it and comparing. :)
But I do not agree that the show has story problems and I still think it is a gift to a director. I just don't think he had the stuff to direct this particular show as it deserved or demanded to be, and while the budget from Roundabout was surely a big hurdle for it, it wasn't just that.
I will say I absolutely loved the poster art for that revival! |
