It was perhaps the most outrageous jaw-dropping experience ever. There were people sitting around me who were ready to leave at intermission. This was during previews I begged them not to leave: "I heard it gets even worse in the second act. You can't miss this." They stayed, but I turned around and saw David Ives, the titular book author, slouched deeply into one of the (many) empty seats right behind us as we laughed our way through it. I felt bad for him.

The most memorable moment was watching a heavily corseted Michael Crawford prancing down a set of stairs. (The corset did not provide the slimming profile that I assume the star was hoping for -- or imagined.) Only a memory of a descent down a curving set of stairs featuring Meat Loaf in Rockabye Hamlet topped it.
