The original production of A Chorus Line (not to be confused with the original CAST, which I would have been too young to see).
My first trip to NYC was in August of 1989, I was 14. This trip was driven mostly by my obsession with The Phantom of the Opera. :-). We were also encouraged to see Les Miserables, which went on to become one of my greatest theatrical loves.
I begged for A Chorus Line to fill the third slot. We had done a medley of the songs in my choir, I had the casette, and in a meta twist, I used to "dance around the living room" to the album as far back as I can remember. A well meaning relative who lived in the city insisted that it was old and tired and that we not go see it. Having lived here for a long time now myself, I totally get that and would have probably said the same thing. (And often do if someone asks what I REALLY think about The Lion King or Chicago, to name a few). But back then I don't think I would have analyzed it that closely and would have been thrilled to see it.
Instead we went to Jerome Robbins Broadway. I get it, it was brand new, had just won the Tony, and it's pretty cool to be able to say I saw it since it didn't last long. But honestly I wasn't into the revue format and didn't have much love for a lot of those older shows (at the time). I fell asleep. LOL. Ah well. |
