Madonna in SPEED THE PLOW. Utter incompetence and on a Broadway stage, yet. You know how when you're in grade school and you're maybe in a classroom or an auditorium and you have to deliver a speech and the teacher says "You have to project your voice!" and you just basically yell? That's what she was like. She flubbed her lines a couple times and completely broke character and started laughing. I was full of admiration for Silver and Mantegna, who managed to give crackerjack performances while playing opposite a rank amateur. But the matinee audience was full of teenage Madonnawannabes wearing brassieres over their sweaters and raggedy lace ribbons in their hair. At intermission the girl seated in front of me turned to her equally befuddled friend and said, "I don't understand this, it's a really weird play ... but don't you think she looks GREAT as a brunette?!" Gaaahhh. I went back some months later and saw Felicity Huffman and it was like, "Oh yeah! A real actress!!"
