While it didn't get "bad" reviews, critics were less than appreciative of this beautiful, haunting play that included some of the late, great Terrence McNally's writing in years. I remember er thinking that if this had opened off Broadway instead of on, it would have had a very (deservedly) long run. It also featured what is arguably the best performance in Tyne Daly's career. The role of a lifetime, and she played it with precision, restraint, and utter humanity.
Since I'm highlighting McNally, I'm also compelled to mention that he gave me one of the best Sunday afternoons of my life, when I attended a matinee of the original Frankie and Johnny at the Claire de Lune in 1988 with the great Kathy Bates. I'm lucky that I got to know the playwright and his husband years later and able to share those sentiments with them both. My condolences to Tom and his family.
Best,
