I also hadn't seen the film before seeing the musical and I agree that it was so much fun to see the story unfold. I ended up seeing it several times and caught all the various replacements over the run.
It's interesting that you felt that way about Gleason's performance. The role of Muriel is a combination of a number of different smaller characters in the film and the subplot romance between her and Andre, invented for the musical, actually gave her something to play and a reason to keep popping up throughout the story. I liked what she did with it and her patented brand of tartness and deadpan humor was just what the show needed. I love her and would always wish that her role was larger, but I don't know how the show could have managed that more than it already had. |
