It's actually not a fact. It's very likely, but not at all fact. If we're going to go by previous vaccine development and trial periods, it's highly unlikely we'll have broad access to a vaccine until at least 2022. What's more likely, based on previous pandemics, is we'll develop effective treatments and/or develop methods to prevent the radical spread of the virus. These things could be figured out in the coming weeks. Is it likely? No. But there's a lot of unlikely things happening these days.
Lots of highly contagious and deadly diseases don't have vaccines and haven't shut our society down. We may NEVER develop a vaccine. The notion that we'll automatically develop one in "12-18 months" is pretty hopeful. It is much more likely we'll learn how to live with the virus over time... rather than eradicate it completely. Waiting to open everything until there's a (right now imaginary) vaccine is both overdramatic and foolish. |
