It's hard to remember what got "bad reviews" vs what just didn't run or transfer from the short scheduled non-profit run.

I might also include shows like The Wild Party (a masterpiece), Dessa Rose, Bernarda Alba, and A Man of No Importance, and Amour... but I don't remember them getting bad or mix/negative reviews I just remember them not getting raves and/or not being hits.

I think Marie Christine got mixed to negative reviews with raves for Audra of course. But I must say I was blown away by this show. It was uneven, and some of it was amazing and some wasn't, and the stuff written for the women was almost 100% sensational and fascinating while the stuff for the men was much more uneven and not nearly as immediately recognizable as good or thrilling like the female stuff... but, on the whole it was/is one of the most original, interesting, intense and passionate scores I've ever heard for a musical and I'm so glad I saw it. I listen to the score often and am always thrilled by it.

I think I saw MC and The Wild Party within the same two week stretch or so, because I remember just being floored that the same person wrote both. I think I was familiar with Hello Again but that didn't prepare me for what he did in either of these shows let alone both in the same season. I sat there thinking "well Marie Christine will never be a hit, it's super dark and weird... but this... he has proven he can write show music! This score is hit after hit." Obviously i was in the minority. But I genuinely think TWP is a masterpiece, and that entire production (with that exception of the actor who played Black, i'm sad to single out so I won't use his name) blew me away like few original shows I've seen have before or since (I didn't start really attending broadway shows until about 1997).

I would love for a full scale NYC revival to take a new look at Marie Christine. I think it would be quite a role for Cynthia Erivo to take on, or many other women I'm sure. Maybe given LaChiusa a chance to do a bit of re-writing or even if not, it's a sensational piece in so many respects, and I think deeply underrated.
