I was surprised that Ben Brantley said in his tribute that he hadn't seen the Lane/Dennehy Iceman Cometh. It ran for 6 weeks at BAM in 2015, and it was one of the big events of that season.

I literally drove 100 miles while it was snowing to see it (and it was worth it). I had a ticket for the first week in March, which I thought was late enough that snow wouldn't be an issue. I learned my lesson on that one, and I really think hard now before buying tickets between November 15 and the end of March.

The Sunday matinee? I went the same day for the same reason.

That was the last time I saw him on-stage- so glad I caught it to see his performance (and the rest of the cast as well)

Such a loss.

Yes, it was the Sunday show, so we were both there at the same time! I think it snowed around 3 inches -- enough to make you have to drive slowly and carefully, but not a treacherous amount.

I saw Dennehy in 3 shows - the other two were Inherit the Wind and Love Letters with Carol Burnett just a few months before Iceman. I wish I had seen his Willy Loman. It looks like the production was filmed and shown on cable, but was not released commercially. Dennehy won the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for the role, but lost the Emmy to Jack Lemmon in Tuesdays with Morrie.

''Brian Dennehy was a great actor and a great friend to me for over 30 years. Never more so than when we acted together in 'The Iceman Cometh' for Bob Falls in Chicago and then later at BAM. He was my biggest supporter and a loving mentor through that whole experience and I will always love him and never forget him for that, as well as his fierce brilliance, wit, and that wild Irish twinkle in his eye. Rest In Peace, dear friend. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, Jen, and his five children.''

He was also an absolutely PERFECT Sir Toby Belch in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's 2012 production of "Twelfth Night".

Hilarious, gruff, with an undertone of world-weary cynicism.

I'm glad I bought the DVD.

KRAPP'S LAST TAPE at Stratford, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. Dennehy's Krapp totally eclipsed his Eerie Smith in HUGHIE which was the second part of the double play bill. Dennehy's Krapp was funny in a mordant way and very very sad. Beckett in a North American mode and Beckett at its best reaching straight into the heart.

Deirdre, I was lucky enough to get to perform with your Dad in INHERIT THE WIND (I played the Mayor). He was incredibly kind to me and was always available to chat or share a story from his remarkable career. And he had a wicked sense of humor. I was always sorry that we didn't continue after Chris left so your Dad could switch over and play Drummond. He would have been spectacular. My condolences to you and all of your family on your loss. A very, very sad day indeed.

I second the idea that as soon as I heard I thought of Deirdre and came right here. My words of wisdom at a time like this? I lost my my only sibling, a sister, when I was three. I lost my mom when I was four. They would, arguably, have been my two closest relationships throughout my life, and yet I have no memories of them whatsoever. Once you pass through the stages of grief, hopefully you will have years of memories to comfort you. Anecdotally, I've observed that the first round of birthdays, Father's Day, Christmas, etc., will be difficult, but after that it will "Remember when Dad did/said...?" followed by smiles and laughter.

For the record, your dad was a damned fine actor.

{Hugs}

One of the greatest.
A few years ago I heard him give a talk where he summed up his career. In paraphrase:

When he was young, the directors all said, “Who is Brian Dennehy?”
After a few years they said, “Get me Brian Dennehy!”
A few years more and they said “Get me a young Brian Dennehy!”
A few years more and they said, “Who is Brian Dennehy?”

In that magnificent production of DEATH OF A SALESMAN with Dennehy, Franz, et al., there's that scene where the whole family is talking together. It's one of their very few happy moments together -- maybe their only one, and I'm pretty sure it's a flashback scene. Willy is blathering on about something, in high spirits. But when Linda tries a few times to enter the conversation, Willy just shuts her down by bulldozing right over her words, completely dismissing her as if he has absolutely no interest in what she has to say, because he's the man of the house, the king of his castle and of his world, and she's just a woman. It's all there in the text, but Dennehy and Franz played it so beautifully that I could feel the whole audience cringe in hatred for him and sympathy for her every time that happened, and I even remember some audible responses of disgust from several spectators.

Absolutely unforgettable.

I saw his Salesman on Broadway, in LA, and in the West End, and was blown away every time by the emotional impact of his portrayal. The rest of the casts were awesome as well, especially Elizabeth Franz and Ron Eldard. All my other top favorite stage performances have been in musicals, and I've seen a lot of great theater, but that Salesman deserves to be seen widely, and I really hope that there is a way for Showtime to bring it back on their channel and/or a DVD release, or sell the rights to Broadway HD, or something.

I also had the privilege of seeing his performances in Long Day's Journey, Inherit the Wind, and a few other productions. He was always excellent, and will be greatly missed. My condolences to Deirdre and all his family and friends.

the scene you're referring to is near the end of Act I, and it is not a flashback-- Happy has just come up with his 'brilliant' idea to sell sporting goods (they'll form opposing teams and play against one another... despite not actually having a product to SELL).

Willy is so excited about the prospect of the boys finally being bigger than Bernard and Charley, and he feels important because he can offer them advice on business, believing himself to be such a big shot.

Linda's interjections are bulldozed, as you say, and I think the other aspect of it is that he finally feels important and he can actually offer advice to which Biff will listen.

Powerfully sad scene... I bet Dennehy was every bit as amazing as everyone says.

I've taught the play probably close to 50 times now, and EVERY single time I learn something new or find another layer.

I'm a fan of the Dustin Hoffman film (it's the only one my school has), and I saw Philip Seymour do the role in 2012, and he was fantastic as well. Is there a video of the Dennehy performance??? I'd love to see him tackle it.

***I watched his scene with Charlie in Act II-- "you're the only friend I've got... isn't that a remarkable thing?" HEART. BROKEN.***

Yes, and that actor who played Charley -- Howard Witt -- was so perfectly cast and so wonderful in the role.

Every time I see a production of DEATH OF A SALESMAN, I find it almost unbearable to watch -- yet fully believable -- that, even though Willie is in a desperate financial situation from the beginning of the play and then loses his job completely, he CANNOT accept the offer of a job from Charley simply because of his pride.

I had only read the play and it was paired with Hughie (and it was great) but "Krapp’s Last Tape" was a mesmerizing performance, from beginning to end. Nothing short of a Beckett master class. I wish it had been filmed.

So very sad...such a gifted, devoted actor. And can recently be found doing beautiful work in a LAW & ORDER: SVU from several seasons ago...glad yet another permanent record of his work. His Willy Loman onstage was wonderful.

I only met Brian Dennehy once in 2003 on the night of his second Tony Award win. i had somehow ended up escorting Patty Clarkson around Radio City Music hall looking for her date Richard Greenberg who had won the Tony that night for "Take Me Out" They had become separated after he went onstage to accept his award. Finally we were told that Richard had already gone on to the Tony party. I was in a quandary as to how to get Patty to the Marriot when we ran into Dennehy and his party getting into his limo. i had seen both his James Tyrone and a few years earlier his Willy Loman (my favorite Willy Loman of the 19 I have seen.) We had met many stars that night, Patty and myself traveling around Radio City but finally I was rendered speechless. He and Patty exchanged mutual admiration and finally I found my voice. "Brian," I said, "could you take Patty to the party in your limosine? She and Richard Greenberg have become separated. If you have any trouble getting her in, just tell them Elizabeth McCann said it was okay."(she had)"Sure thing, Tom," he said slapping me on the shoulder, "I'll see that she gets in all right. We got room for you too of you want to come" I declined being only a lowly seat filler and somewhat astonished by the fact that I had just called Mr. Dennehy solely by his first name as though we were good friends and imposed upon him for a favor though not for myself. In my rented tux, (As such I didn't even mind that he got my name wrong) I walked back to my car thinking that he had just given me the third of three great evenings in his presence and as impressed by his personal magnetism as I had been by his acting talent. I regret I never had the chance to see him again onstage nor in person but truly wish that this great and kind man rests in peace.
