I'm not sure that the concept of "War Paint" could ever have worked, but songwriters Korie and Frankel ("Grey Gardens," "Far from Heaven") are about the best we have at the moment, and "War Paint" had the best and most sophisticated Broadway score of recent years. And of course it also had a pair of divine divas, at the peak of their talents. A classy and treasurable evening.
Foolish Harvey Weinstein fired Korie and Frankel (and most of the original creative team) from "Finding Neverland" after the show played its tryout at the Curve, Leicester, starring Julian Ovenden and Rosalie Craig. The score that K & F composed for "Neverland" was quite wonderful, while the replacement score by Gary Barlow was mostly pop junk with lyrics that often don't rhyme. |
