The gay subtext in The Bells of St. Mary's is not blatant, explicit, or overtly sexual because the boys Tommy Smith and Eddie Breen are only 14 years old and, after all, St Mary's is a Catholic school. For decades I watched the film every year around Christmastime with my family and never noticed a gay subtext.

When I saw The Divine Sister at the Soho Playhouse on 2/05/11, I pretty much busted a gut laughing during the scene between Mother Superior and Timothy. Charles Busch was able to see through all the carefully coded language that Dudley Nichols and Leo McCarey used in the film and brilliantly satirized the homophobia that was there beneath the surface. In doing so, he made it all quite hilarious.

On 6/25/16 I saw a very funny local production of The Divine Sister, which was actually staged in the auditorium of a Lutheran Church. Unfortunately I have not seen the film in over 10 years -- my DVD is at my family's vacation home in central Illinois, and I keep forgetting to bring it back to Chicago.

There is a scene from the film on YouTube with the 2 boys, Father O'Malley, and Mother Superior, which gives you some idea of what I'm talking about. I tried googling The Bells of St. Mary's gay subtext and it brought up an article in which the author refers to Eddie Breen as Ingrid Bergman's gay student (which IMO is a bit of a stretch), but I wasn't able to open it and read the entire article.
