An unfortunate but inevitable decision. The first show was supposed to start May 19, so rehearsals must have been imminent.

The linked NY Times article about the Public is very interesting. They are paying the artists for the run of any canceled show. Most of the staff is furloughed from May until Aug 31, but they will still get health benefits for the rest of the year and are getting paid for all of March and April. Eustis was hospitalized in March for what he believes was the coronavirus. He's taken a 40% pay cut.

There is a new Apple Family play to be presented for free on Apr 29 about the pandemic, with the Apple family on a Zoom call. I'm very intrigued.

From the Public website:

In advance of the live premiere, the four original THE APPLE FAMILY PLAYS and THE GABRIELS trilogy are now available to stream for free in the New York Metro area.

With staff furloughed until the end of August, it’s doubtful we’ll be seeing any programming at The Public until maybe November at the earliest (barring other factors, such as government mandates about crowd size etc.), if not next year.

Singapore/Fling, I think you're right. Eustis is quoted in the article as saying that he likes to keep his commitments (hence paying artists for cancelled shows), but he has no idea when programming will re-start and he doesn't want to commit to anything until that's clear. So even after theaters are given the go-ahead, the Public won't have anything formalized and will have to go through that process before actually having performances.

Eustis's approach is better than repeated cancellations and postponements, although most organizations would find that hard to do. The Public is financially more stable than a lot of theater companies and can withstand a long pause better than most, although they are anticipated to have a multi-million dollar shortfall by the end of the summer.
