Sondheim discusses Sunset Boulevard on page 146 of LOOK, I MADE A HAT. His conversation with Wilder was about 1960, apparently the only time he ever considered making a musical of it and did any work on it. He states that he resisted the idea when it was raised after Sweeney Todd.(He also believes Wilder was right about it having to be an opera even after the ALW musical was produced.)
"I had no desire to write an opera, which is a form I resist."
Clearly, HE doesn't believe Sweeney is an opera. |
