Broadway Theater Trip - June 5 through 11. Please advise.....
Posted by: row1 10:44 am EDT 04/19/20

I planned a Broadway theatre trip months ago. Flying in June 5 and flying out June 11. The hotel where I have a pre-paid, nonrefundable reservation is “temporarily closed.”

The event I have a ticket for at 54 Below on June 6 is still on the calendar and has not been cancelled.

Playbill.com says Broadway performances are scheduled to resume the week of June 8.

I think it would be exciting to be in town the week that Broadway comes back to life---if that’s what happens.

It seems that every day brings new news in this fluid situation. What would you do? Would it be best to cancel my trip? Or go for it?

Your trip sounds exactly like the one I was to do April 3-9, six days, airline and hotel non-refundable and tickets for a show at 54 Below.
I booked the flight and hotel on Orbitz. Though Delta now seems to be doing credits for a future flight, there was something on their website to click on, and I was refunded the cost of the plane ticket. On Orbitz, where I had booked the flight and hotel, there was a link for additional help. I clicked on something regarding my hotel reservation, and it said I would have the full amount (a lot) credited back to my credit card, which it was after a couple of weeks. 54 Below has the most wonderful staff, and they gave a choice to get a credit for the future or a refund, and since I couldn't predict when I would be able to go, I chose the refund, and that's been refunded. In all, everyone came through. I agree you should see if your flight is canceled and re-booked to another. In that case you should be able to get a refund, but a credit for the future, and they are being very lenient on the dates, isn't so bad. Good luck! Also, the dates for when things will happen again keep going out further and further. Everything in early June might still be canceled.

And I would try to call and email (electronic paper trail) without response, then dispute the charge on credit card. That will get someone’s attention even if the charge is a few months old.

Wait for them to cancel on you...

I am in a similar travel situation in June home to England for a few days. I could cancel my flights now but Expedia is saying be aware for that time period I would be subject to usual cancellation terms. I don’t think I will be going but I am waiting for the airline to cancel me and I should at least get the ability to rebook a usually “no change”‘ticket. I might even be able to get my money back depending on the provisions in place. I gain nothing from cancelling myself now.

Alaska airline wouldn’t refund my money.

I only got a credit even though California had a stay at home order with penalties for violating. I talked to a supervisor that said credit was it and I should be grateful to Alaska airline in getting that.

They ran all four flights that day with less than 10 passengers on each plane. A friend of mine is a travel agent and he suspects the airline kept losing money in flights to meet airport gate requirements to not lose the gate in the future. Wasteful fuel and environmental impact to keep a gate.

I agree to wait until airline cancels. American I get credit but can apply for refund by separate process. Going through the motions now.

Yes, the airlines are only providing refunds to original form of payment if they cancel your flight, and even then it's under duress; they were trying to give credits only in that case but the regulators reminded them of their obligation if they cancel the flight. Since the flights operated, you were technically not entitled to a refund, but the airlines have waived change penalties, and have even extended the validity of tickets and credits. Normally you'd have to use the value of the ticket within one year from date of purchase, so if you bought the ticket 9-10 months ago, you'd kind of be out of luck. Now I think they're just giving vouchers for future travel valid for two years. If your flight *is* cancelled, they're still trying to convince people to take vouchers by adding a 25% bonus (so $200 original ticket gets a $250 voucher) because if they give everyone a refund they'll literally run out of cash.

Also credit/voucher for me with United and Aer Lingus (who's giving your expenditure plus 10%). Booking through a third party may include extra rules and fees.

And, yes, you have to ask because all flights are not cancelled.

It’s a trip to see New Order and the Pet Shop Boys shows together, even if the shows get postponed I will still come if I can and it seems safer. If I can come I hope I have better luck with Alaska, having said that the flights were the cheap part of my trip. Six nights in SF and Four in LA hotels really mounts up !!! Hope the hotels will round if the quarantine is still ongoing.

I mean, what do you have to cancel? I don't think there's any chance you'll be able to come, but the tickets will be refunded for you.

I just finished cancelling the last element of my planned June 2 - 8 theatre trip. Will look forward to coming again when I can. The airlines are now giving COVID-19 relief beyond May 31, starting a couple of days ago.

This excerpt from the Charlotte St. Martin interview with Deadline says it all...

St. Martin wants to set the record straight. The president of the Broadway League, the trade group representing theater owners, producers, presenters and general managers on Broadway and theaters throughout North America, says that June 7 was never announced as a date certain for the Broadway reopening – or even a date uncertain.

A June 7 reopening was “never, ever the case. We did not say that,” St. Martin tells Deadline.

“We just said that [at that point] we were exchanging and refunding tickets up to June 7. I mean, every couple of days our guesstimates go further out. As late as two weeks ago we were thinking that with any luck we might be up by July and that a worst case scenario might be September. Now the best guesses are that unless there’s serious testing and information that we don’t currently have, we’re probably looking at September or later.”

Even if your hotel is temporarily closed, I would think they'd still answer the phone for reservations.

Some will refund even a non-refundable reservation. If not now, closer to your date.

there is no reasonable scenario where Broadway opens on June 8

It’s not going to happen. They’re just canceling out in chunks. Labor Day if we’re very lucky. Next spring if we’re not

A signal: the Public cancelled all summer programs in the parks/boros

That's the single best indicator I've seen; no one believes B'way is on anyone's spring/summer re-opening plan. People are reluctant to board elevators; a packed theater seems impossible to fathom before Labor Day. And that is decidedly wishful thinking. January 1st may be too. I agree with JAllen: full re-opening, spring 2021.
