There have been four videos of this great Broadway opera. Two of them --Houston Grand Opera (filmed in Germany) and the recent production at Teatro Real, Madrid-- are commercially available. The latter, in English and available on Blu-ray, is quite a disappointment, despite the presence of Patricia Racette as Mrs. Maurant.
The first two telecasts --never commercially released-- are the New York City Opera live PBS telecast from 1979, and the English National Opera production (1992), the latter shown only in the UK. Of these four video productions, the first one, from City Opera, is by far the best. |
