Macbeth in HarlemMacbeth in Harlem: Black Theater in America from the Beginning to Raisin in the Sun
(Rutgers Univ Press - Hardcover Book/Kindle Edition)
By Clifford Mason. Tells the story of black actors and their fellow black theatrical artists, from the early nineteenth century to the dawn of the civil rights era. How they fought to carve out a space for authentic black voices onstage at a time when blockbuster plays like Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Octoroon trafficked in cheap stereotypes. A testament to black artistry thriving in the face of adversity, chronicling how even as the endemic racism in American society and its theatrical establishment forced black performers to abase themselves for white audiences’ amusement, African Americans overcame those obstacles to enrich the nation’s theater in countless ways. 246 pages.

TRIVIA QUESTION for the experts, re: Sing Street

In reply to: SOUND ADVICE WEEKLY RECAP PT 1: MUSIC & BOOK NOW AVAILABLE + UPCOMING RELEASE NEWS - T.B._Admin. 12:58 pm EDT 04/21/20

I'm assuming they're still intent on the show happening, whether in fall 2020, not till 2022, or sometime inbetween...
but in the meanwhile, is Sing Street the first officially labeled "Original Broadway Cast Recording" to be released without any firm idea of when, or even if, an opening night will actually happen? (and, for that matter, the first OBC with no idea whether the entire "Original Broadway Cast" on the album will still be the exact original Broadway cast if/when the show finally does materialize).

PAL JOEY

In reply to: TRIVIA QUESTION for the experts, re: Sing Street - ShowGoer 05:47 pm EDT 04/21/20

I believe the Columbia Masterworks LP recording of Pal Joey had that image of a white seal at the top of the front cover which contained the wording ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST****. The CD (which I have in front of me) states on the spine and on the top of the back cover Broadway Cast Recording, even though this was a studio cast recording made on 9/20-22/50. Vivienne Segal (the original Vera Simpson) and Harold Lang sang the lead roles with Beverly Fite, Barbara Ashley, Jo Hurt, and Kenneth Remo rounding out the cast as Linda, Gladys, Melba, and Ludlow. The Columbia LP was an enormous success and apparently led to the Broadway revival, which opened a year and 3 months later on 1/03/52. Segal and Lang were again cast as Vera and Joey, but Pat Northrup, Helen Gallagher, Elaine Stritch, and Lionel Stander played the featured roles.

The '52 revival of Pal Joey received its own recording with Northrup, Gallagher, and Stritch preserving their performances on the Capitol LP. Apparently Stander's role as Ludlow in the revival was non-singing. Dick Beavers and Jane Froman sang the lead roles of Joey and Vera. This '52 recording contained (on the front cover) a red rectangular box with white letter wording BROADWAY CAST. Above the large rectangular box in very small black letters were the words WITH MEMBERS OF THE.
