That was the first show I ever saw at the Delacorte, and it was a completely thrilling experience. Come to think of it, it was probably the first Shakespeare play I ever saw live. I remember being astonished at how easy it was to understand the language. I had expected to struggle more. And I remember crying at the end.
Over the years I've come to dislike Lear. Perhaps I've seen it too many times. But Lear is such a jerk that I've lost all sympathy for him. But that night, the show was heartbreaking. |
