Til there was Hugh: Jackman says 'The Music Man' is still set for Fall
Posted by: WaymanWong 06:42 pm EDT 04/22/20

Hugh Jackman tells Variety in its new ''Big Ticket'' podcast: “I speak with [producer] Scott Rudin every other day and we’re due to start rehearsals on June 29 and that hasn’t changed. Our first preview is Sept. 15. But of course, we’ll have to see what happens. But at present, that’s still the plan.”

I find it hard to believe that, while this is still the plan for the moment, discussions aren't happening about what the options are for postponing. The production can happen whenever Jackman decides to make time to do it, even if they have to get a new theatre, even if they have to completely recast every other role, even if [fill in the blank here]. They are in the best position possible for a Broadway production.

If I was Scott Rudin, I would be in favor of postponing for, at least, a year, if not two. What's going to make this production a hot ticket is that tourists from all over the world will snap up the tickets at whatever ridiculous prices Rudin decides to offer in order to see Jackman. If tourists aren't coming to New York in the fall, even if Broadway has reopened, that's going to seriously cut into the production's potential revenue. If Rudin is depending on a more local audience, he's going to have to offer more realistic pricing and I don't think any producer would want to "waste" this opportunity by offering prices that people can actually afford.

Unless the idea is that this production is SO much of a draw that it'll coax reluctant tourists back to the city because they just can't resist the chance to see Jackman as Harold Hill, even if it means potentially catching Covid-19.

I wonder what the advance sales are

It could be that a lot of the run is already sold and if performances happen, refunds for not making it to town don’t have to be given. Also jackmans schedule is probably unknown. I’m sure his movies have been delayed so all of those film schedules will have to be scrapped and renegotiated once Hollywood opens.

The latest polls show 20% of Americans think shut down is too far. I expect that number to grow as stay in place orders continue to be extended into summer.

Maybe we can develop a system like what they are doing in China. We would need covid-19 tests that are available all over in NYC and give immediate results. Everyone who is going to the theatre on a given date must be tested earlier that day, get a negative result, and be issued a dated green card. Only people with valid green cards (theatre-goers, actors, personnel, etc.) would be admitted into the theatre.
