I agree that Lee Remick and Harry Guardino do right by the song, but Sutton and Raul’s voices — not to mention the way they act out the song in that Encores video — take it to a whole different level. Still, while I wasn’t fortunate enough to have seen Lee and Harry on stage, I have a feeling their performances would have more than compensated for their less than “beautiful” voices if the latter happens to be a sticking point for a particular listener.

While I do really like Sutton's voice in/for this, I prefer Lee Remicks for it... and I may as well come out and say that I think Sutton's voice does almost no role she's played any favors other than Millie, and she has one of the most unremarkable and unimpressive voices I've ever heard from a reigning broadway star in the history of broadway musicals. :)
That's not to say I don't enjoy very much and find her wonderful and her singing voice totally good (though again specific, but not in a unique way or in an impressive way), but... it's her charm and likability and the timing of her getting Millie that are responsible for her musical theater stardom because it can't be her (very capable and good but nothing actually special) singing voice.

You and I actually agree on this on the whole. I've been a HUGE fan of Raul Esparza's voice since Tick, Tick, Boom! and I think the quality of that voice combined with Sutton's solid vocal skills make for a beautiful and touching rendition of this song. That said, on its own, there's nothing particularly memorable or special about Sutton's voice. I remember watching her Lincoln Center special on PBS a while back and finding it, to my surprise, somewhat lackluster. Don't get me wrong: I think she deserves all the success she has gotten. She's a triple threat and has charisma to spare when she's playing a role on stage. But absent the acting, dancing, and storytelling components of a complete theatrical performance, the voice doesn't quite hold my attention.
