The No. 1 song in the UK is You'll Never Walk Alone, with Michael Ball, Captain Tom Moore, and the NHS Voices that Care Choir. One of our colleagues from the UK can tell the story in more detail, but Captain Tom Moore is a WWII army vet, and he decided to do a charity walk in his garden for the National Health Service, even though he is 99 years old and uses a walker. He has raised over 28 million pounds, and Michael Ball sings You'll Never Walk Alone as Moore speaks the words on a charity single.

This is Michael Ball's first No. 1 single in the UK. Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love was a No. 2 single back in 1989, so he has been charting for over 30 years.

This is Rodgers and Hammerstein's 2nd No. 1 in a little over a year, with their last hit being Ariana Grande's "7 Rings," whose melody was taken heavily from "My Favorite Things."

This is the fourth time "You'll Never Walk Alone" has hit No. 1 in the UK, and the second time it's been No. 1 on a charity single. I don't think Rodgers and Hammerstein have had another No. 1 single in the UK or the US besides the two already mentioned.

I don't think Rodgers and Hammerstein have had another No. 1 single in the UK or the US besides the two already mentioned.

Perry Como's cover version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening" was No. 1 in the US for five weeks in 1949. The Billboard Hot Hundred chart didn't exist under that name until 1958, but in the 1940s they published three different song popularity charts, one of which was Best-Selling Singles.

keikekaze, thanks for pointing out that webpage! I have always wondered which Golden Age musicals had had big successes on the pop charts, and I never thought to look through Wikipedia to figure that out. It looks like Ezio Pinza's version of Some Enchanted Evening also made the Top 10.

I did a little more prowling, and in the UK, Vic Damone's On the Street Where You Live hit No. 1 in 1958, which is the same year as My Fair Lady's UK premiere. His version hit No. 4 in the US in 1956, which was My Fair Lady's Broadway debut year.

....who think it’s their club song and have little notion of the song’s origins. Someone—maybe it was here on ATC, Maybe at a convention —told me years ago, she was working in England with a bunch of blokes, and somehow they were somewhere and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was playing. The lads all started singing, and were stunned when she joined in. “It’s a football song. How do you know a football song?”
