I think The Inheritance and Slave Play both got overhyped at one point, which resulted in a backlash that was overly harsh, then had a response to the backlash that elevated the show again (although not to the overhyped level). The Inheritance is definitely flawed, but much of it is very good, and it is also moving. I only saw three of the Best Play nominees, but I would have given the award to The Inheritance of the ones I saw.
The Inheritance also had the advantage that it was the only Broadway nominee for Best Play and Best Director. If I counted correctly, there were 15 Drama Desk categories where there was only one Broadway nominee, and the Broadway show won in 13 of them.
I wish Soft Power had won something, but I'm not sure which category would have been its best shot. I personally would have given the Featured Actor award to Ricamora over Borle, but Borle's performance was very hyped, and he probably won fairly easily. |
