| " Unless you're trying to get run-lengths to conform to theory, but I thought we'd already agreed that length of run should not be the arbiter of anything" Ha, when did we agree to that? That's actually exactly what I'm trying for... and I think it's really the only fair common arbiter because different shows/investments require different factors of time and cost to turn profit, but that isn't part of the audience's decision to see it or not (other than, perhaps, marketing budget and its efficacy). If Band's Visit cost more to produce it would have likely run the same amount of time and been a "flop". Most shows don't get to charge Bette Midler prices. And even The Producers got to do it for the original stars but still had to maintain itself with no stars for several years, which it did (Dolly did not really), with notably lower prices. I wonder if Bette had been paid the same at Katrina Lenk and if there were no insane ticket prices, and if people weren't will to spend $100+ for the upper balcony (very abnormal), would that first year of Dolly turned a profit? Anyway, yes, I think # of performances in the run is crucial to determining whether the MUSICAL is *NOT* a flop. I'm talking about the term as used for assessing the MUSICAL (not the product of the original production being sold for profit by the producers with investment capital from investors), culturally. A show that runs 2 years and doesn't make profit is not a cultural flop, but it is a financial flop. Referring to it as a flop when discussing it as a musical in the world of theater and culture is, to me, inaccurate. For example: no one but the investors care that Sweeney Todd didn't make a profit in the original production... it swept the Tonys and ran on Broadway for 576 performances and 16 months... it may not have been a hit but it was not a flop culturally. The Band's Visit ran only 24 performances longer than Sweeney... but that's a hit and Sweeney is a flop, according to financial definitions. Fine... that may work for several posters here, but I'm saying it makes no sense culturally and I stand by that. |
