I agree. I don't understand why singers take it up the octave at the end of Losing My Mind. There is plenty to show off on and dig into in the rest of the song. And because Sondheim is no dummy, it also ends low for dramantic reasons...the way she scoops down into the depths on the the last "my" and the resigned "mind" mirroring the message of the song.
I don't like it when the high note is taken in Memory either...although I don't think this ever happens in performance, only concerts and recordings. The woman has just belted her face off in one of the most thrilling climaxes in musical theatre. We don't need the high note at the end too :-)
Related, but different since the composers actually rewrote the songs to end on higher notes, but I also prefer the original lower, softer endings (London cast) of Stars from Les Miz and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom. |
