You've just described about 75% of what has counted as a musical since The Black Crook. And as for the "Miss Desmond" moment that you found so 'maudlin', to a whole lot of folks that was pure theatrical magic and the song that follows that moment one of the finest in a musical these past few decades (and Sondheim claims he wish he had written it). |
