| I've read somewhere that Bergman's production of THE MERRY WIDOW, a year before, influenced the film so perhaps operetta was already in the film's dna before Sondheim and co. got a hold of it. I love Bergman's take on the theater, intense but intimate, not showy. He was particular good at mixing the themes and forms of theater with filmmaking at that period of his career in a free, unlabored way. | |
